Program Highlights:
We all have an accent. Sometimes there is little difference between how we speak and how those around us speak. And sometimes there is a significant difference between the two. The question at issue is the degree to which you speak differently from those you work or mix with and the consequent implications.. It is known that the conclusions that others come to, based on the way you speak, can have a severe impact on both your economic well-being and that of the organization you work for. Dr. Baugh maintains that a knowledge of languages and their history can help you understand why you form impressions of other people the way you do. He also emphasizes the importance of being tolerant of languages and dialects other than your own. Dr. Baugh is a member of the National Science Foundation, and an advisor to Merriam-Webster and The American Heritage College Dictionary. Dr. Baugh has appeared on "ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings," and his current research on linguistic profiling has been featured on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition."
