Tempered Radicals: How People Use Difference to Inspire Change at Work

Debra E. Meyerson
Associate Professor
Stanford University School of Education

Program Highlights:

  • The advantages of diversity to an organization.

  • Perspectives that create subtle but powerful improvements in corporate culture.

  • The value of seeking out the "agents of change" in your organization.

People who live according to their own values rather than that of the organization and yet strive for success are called "tempered radicals".

There are, of course, many who do not fit the corporate mold but, nevertheless, benefit their organization in subtle ways. These individuals are often agents of change and can show the corporation how to better cope with our diverse world.  Rather than feeling trapped into either assimilating or having to leave, such individuals can be encouraged and treated as valued resources.

Meyerson illustrates a spectrum of innovative and inspiring ways individuals can "rock the boat" without falling out, thereby steering a course for powerful, positive change.

Dr. Meyerson has published more than thirty articles and chapters in scholarly and applied publications and is the author of Tempered Radicals: How People Use Difference to Inspire Change at Work. She received her PhD from Stanford University and her BS and MS degrees from MIT.
