Red Queen Competition: A Dynamic View of Strategy

Scroll Down for a Preview of this Program

William P. Barnett
Professor of Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior
Stanford University

Program Highlights:

  • Why periods of economic instability lead to great innovations.

  • Why companies have important capabilities they don't know about.

  • Why we fail to understand how we made a profit

Professor Barnet reminds us of the famous line from Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" when the Red Queens says "it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place." He maintains that markets can become most unstable and, in that event, opportunity often presents itself. He regards competition not as a problem but as something that spurs on innovation and creativity. In your position as manager it is not always you that needs to resolve problems - rather it is your job to build an organization that comes up with solutions.

William P. Barnett studies competition within a variety of industries, analyzing how strategic differences and strategic change among organizations affect their prospects for growth, performance, and survival. He holds a BA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and is the Director of Stanford's Executive Management Program.
