How to maintain a
fun-loving attitude, the
spirit of a warrior, and the heart of a
servant.
Southwest Airlines
was started and
still subscribes to one basic tenet: treat
customers well and they will come back because they enjoy the
experience. Decades of growth at
Southwest have shown the value of this precept. Other companies
have tried to follow the same course but without success.
So what's the secret?
Colleen Barrett, President of Southwest
Airlines, says that she spends most of her time trying to keep her
employees satisfied. This includes letting them know that they are
a valuable asset to the company and encouraging them to always do
the right thing. And she notes that you cannot expect all of your
employees to be angels - but you can expect honesty, cooperation,
and commitment. Her guiding rule is to hire based on the potential
employee's attitude - they can be taught the necessary skills.
Colleen Barrett has been with Southwest from the beginning,
previously serving as Secretary of the Corporation, Vice President
of Administration, and Executive Vice President of Customers. She
has received numerous business awards and honors, including
Forbes.com's "World's 100 Most Powerful Women," Fortune's "50 Most
Powerful Women in Business," and Business Week's "Best Managers."
