Professor of Leadership, Claremont McKenna College

Program Highlights
  • Emphasize your focus and leave a lasting impression by telling a compelling story.

  • Behave in the same manner that gives your organization its unique advantage.

  • Announce and set priorities with simple “must do” rules and “memorable moments.”

The spotlight shines brightly and continuously on managers and executives as a result of their role as leaders. The most effective leaders use this spotlight as a useful way of getting things done thus influencing the behavior and decision-making of their staff, whether they are present or not.

Professor Conger explains that leadership is judged more by daily actions than the it is by the big decisions. He shows how successful leaders employ particular techniques to lead members of their organizations and guide their decisions. According to Conger, the spotlight also shines on careless comments or actions, and, as a result, the best leaders are always careful to project the right image.

Dr. Conger serves as Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California. He has written for numerous publications, including Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, and authored twelve books, most recently, "The Practice of Leadership." Professor Conger received his BA from Dartmouth College, his MBA from the University of Virginia, and his DBA from the Harvard Business School.
